Pickleball balls, and why there are two completely different kinds

Here's the thing nobody tells a beginner: indoor and outdoor pickleballs are not the same ball, and they are not interchangeable. Buy the wrong one and the game genuinely plays worse. It's a cheap mistake to avoid, so let's make it simple.

Outdoor ballshave 40 small holes, are made of harder, heavier plastic, and are built to cut through wind and survive rough courts. They're fast, they're loud, and they crack eventually — especially in the cold. Indoor balls have fewer, larger holes (usually 26), are lighter and softer, and fly slower with a softer feel that suits a still gym. Use an indoor ball outside and the wind tosses it around; use an outdoor ball inside and it's harder and louder than the gym wants.

What decides which one is right is simply where you play. On a gym floor, buy indoor. On an outdoor court, buy outdoor. If you play both, buy a sleeve of each — they're inexpensive, and it's the correct answer rather than a compromise. The other consideration is your league: many organized games mandate a specific ball (the Franklin X-40 is the USA Pickleball national-championship ball and a very common default), so if you're joining a group, check what they use before you stock up.

Price per ball is low; the only real variable is how many you buy. A dozen is plenty for a couple of players; a 60-pack only makes sense for a club or a clinic.
