Buy the Franklin FS Tour Dynasty Pro 16mm if you want Selkirk's recipe — a 16mm core under a carbon face, from a brand every club recognizes — without Selkirk's premium pricing; it is the paddle for an improver who has outgrown a starter paddle. The budget pick is the JOOLA GRAF Edge 16mm, the cheapest published 16mm carbon paddle we can buy. And if what you actually want is a Selkirk at a Selkirk price, Selkirk's own SLK Evo Control XL is rank 5 on this list for exactly that reason. Live prices and the date they were checked are in the table below.
The framing, stated plainly: we sell Selkirk and we rate it. Selkirk paddles, shoes and bags all appear across this site, and the SLK Evo Control is the paddle our tennis-elbow list leads with. This page is for the reader who has looked at a Selkirk, decided the money or the model is wrong, and wants to know what else does the same job.
What Selkirk is known for, on the record
Everything in this section comes from Selkirk's own published pages and the retailer spec sheets we cite, not from reputation:
- A thick, control-first core with a name. The SLK Evo Control pair publish a 16mm "Rev-Control" polymer core under a T700 carbon fiber face — a specific carbon grade, named, which most brands in our registry do not do.
- Shape variants of the same paddle. The Evo Control ships as a 16 x 7.85 in Max and a 16.4 x 7.4 in XL with a 5.75 in handle — the longest published handle on this site. Buying a shape rather than a model is the Selkirk way.
- A published warranty on its shoes. The CourtStrike Pro 3.0 spec sheet carries a 6-month outsole warranty, which is the only footwear warranty anyone in our registry publishes. See the CourtStrike review.
- A line that is being replaced right now. Selkirk's own press release of February 17, 2026 announces an all-new SLK lineup — Valkyrie, Geo and Dauntless — in which the Geo replaces the SLK EVO Power and Control and the Dauntless replaces the SLK Halo. If you are reading reviews of an EVO or a Halo, you are reading about a paddle on its way out of the catalogue.
That last point is the practical reason this page exists. A superseded paddle is not a bad paddle — it is often the bargain — but it is a paddle whose replacement part, colorway and stock position are all about to change, and one of its two Evo models already shows no buyable offer at our last price check.
Who each alternative is for, in one line:
- Franklin FS Tour Dynasty Pro 16mm — for the 16mm carbon control build from a club-standard brand, at the last price before premium.
- JOOLA Scorpeus Heat Vision 16 — for a thermoformed, textured-carbon control paddle with the current USAP certification wording printed on the listing.
- Wilson Vesper Control 17 — for a thicker core than Selkirk publishes anywhere: 17mm, with the weight, handle and grip all published too.
- JOOLA GRAF Edge 16mm — the budget pick: a published 16mm core and a textured carbon face at the lowest price a top-tier brand charges.
- Selkirk SLK Evo Control XL — the Selkirk answer to Selkirk, and the only paddle here with a 5.75 in handle for a two-handed backhand.

What matches what: Selkirk against each alternative
Each row names the spec the alternative matches and the honest difference. Live prices with their check date are in the Quick picks table above, and each row there has its own price button — so the price gap you see is today's, not one we typed.
| If you were looking at… | Consider | Matches on | Differs by |
|---|
| A premium Selkirk control paddle | Franklin FS Tour Dynasty Pro 16mm | 16mm core, carbon face, tour-series build, USA Pickleball approved | Franklin publishes no weight, dimensions or warranty; no shape variants |
| SLK Evo Control Max | JOOLA Scorpeus Heat Vision 16 | 16mm core, carbon face, widebody 16 x 8 in, thermoformed | Prints "USAP PBCoR.43 Certified" and a 12-month warranty Selkirk's paddle pages do not |
| Any Selkirk sold on "control" | Wilson Vesper Control 17 | Thick core, raw carbon face, control-first tuning | 17mm rather than 16mm; a published 8.1 oz, 5 in handle and 4 1/8 in grip; no warranty published |
| SLK Evo Control, on price | JOOLA GRAF Edge 16mm | 16mm core, textured carbon face, published dimensions | 16.5 x 7.5 in elongated instead of widebody, and a 4 1/8 in small grip |
| SLK Evo Control Max (out of stock) | Selkirk SLK Evo Control XL | Identical 16mm Rev-Control core and T700 carbon face | 16.4 x 7.4 in with a 5.75 in handle — more hand room, less face |
Where no alternative matches Selkirk
The named carbon grade
"T700 carbon fiber" is a specific industrial grade, and Selkirk prints it. Of the alternatives above, the others say "carbon fiber", "raw carbon" or "textured carbon" without a grade. Whether the grade changes how a paddle plays is not something we can test; whether it tells you more about what you bought is not in doubt. Our graphite vs fiberglass page covers what face material does and does not determine.
The handle, for two-handed players
5.75 in is the longest published handle in our registry and nothing else comes close — the nearest is 5.5 in on the JOOLA Astral Perseus and 5.25 in on the Wilson Vesper Power. If a two-handed backhand is your shot, the Selkirk XL is not really substitutable, which is why it is on its own alternatives page. See best elongated paddles for the handle comparison in full.
The outsole warranty, if you came for shoes
A good share of "Selkirk alternative" searching is about court shoes rather than paddles. There, the gap is real and we have said so on the shoe pages: Selkirk is the only brand in our registry that publishes an outsole warranty at all (6 months, on the CourtStrike Pro 3.0). If you wear through outsoles, start at shoes for club and tournament play rather than swapping brands.
How we chose these five
Every pick is already in our registry with a verified live listing, and each one either matches a published Selkirk spec or undercuts Selkirk on price at the last check. Nothing was invented to fill a slot, and no paddle whose price layer shows no buyable offer is ranked — which is why the SLK Evo Control Max and the SLK ERA Power appear in this text and not in the ranking. For the brand-by-brand view instead of a swap list, see Selkirk gear, ranked and best paddle brands.
How we picked
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty paddles. We haven't tested these in a lab, and we say so. Instead we compile the published manufacturer specs, do the math, weight everything toward what a beginner actually needs — forgiveness, a large sweet spot, sane weight and a fair price — and score each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from that research, not measurements we took. Where a fact came from someone else, we name it in Sources.
