Pickleball paddle grip size, and how to measure yours

Grip size is a small number with a big effect on comfort and injury. Here's how to measure yours in under a minute — and why smaller is the safer bet.

Most pickleball players need a grip circumference of about 4 to 4-1/2 inches, and when you're unsure you should pick the smallerone — you can build a grip up with an overgrip, but you can't make it smaller. A too-large grip forces you to squeeze, which strains the forearm and is a common cause of pickleball elbow.

The 60-second ruler test

There are two easy ways to find your size:

  1. The ruler method.Open your dominant hand and line a ruler up with the bottom (palm-side) lateral crease of your palm. Measure to the tip of your ring finger. That distance in inches is your approximate grip size — usually 4 to 4-1/2".
  2. The finger test.Hold a paddle with your normal grip. You should be able to fit the index finger of your other hand snugly in the gap between your fingertips and the base of your thumb. If there's no room, the grip is too small; if there's slop, it's too big.

Why smaller wins when you're between sizes

A slightly small grip lets you add spin and switch grips more freely, and — crucially — you can fatten it up with one or two overgrips to dial in the exact feel. A grip that's too large is a dead end: it forces a tighter squeeze, reduces wrist mobility, and drives the kind of forearm strain that sidelines new players. When in doubt, size down.

Grip length is a thing too

If you hit a two-handed backhand (common for ex-tennis players), look for a paddle with a longer handle so both hands fit comfortably. Elongated paddles usually have longer handles for exactly this reason.

04Questions

Frequently asked

What grip size pickleball paddle do I need?

Most players need roughly 4 to 4-1/2 inches of grip circumference. Measure from the middle palm crease to the tip of your ring finger, and when between sizes, choose the smaller grip and build it up with an overgrip if needed.

Is it better to have a smaller or bigger pickleball grip?

Smaller, when you're unsure. A smaller grip improves wrist action and spin and can be enlarged with overgrips; a too-large grip forces you to squeeze and is a common cause of elbow strain.

Can you change the grip size of a pickleball paddle?

You can make a grip bigger by adding one or more overgrips, but you can't make it smaller. That's the whole reason to size down when in doubt.
