Can you play pickleball on a tennis court?

Yes. A pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet; a tennis court is 78 by 36 feet at its widest, which means a single tennis court comfortably holds one pickleball court in the middle and, with proper markings, up to four across it. Converting one is the standard way clubs and parks have absorbed the sport, and you can do a temporary version yourself with a portable net and some tape.

The one catch is the net. A tennis net is 42 inches at the posts and 36 inches at the center. A pickleball net is 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center. So a tennis net is too high everywhere, and playing over it changes the game.

Option 1: play over the tennis net (fast and imperfect)

You can simply set up inside the service boxes area and play over the existing tennis net. It takes no equipment and is fine for a casual hit. But the net is six inches too high at the posts and two inches too high at the center, and those inches matter: dinks that would clear a pickleball net catch the tape, and drives that would land in go long because you have to hit them higher.

The practical effect is that the soft game — the part of pickleball that actually decides points — barely works. Fine for an introduction, misleading as practice. If your group plays this way regularly, a portable net pays for itself in how much better the game feels.

Option 2: bring a portable net (the right answer)

A portable pickleball net sets up across the tennis court in a few minutes and gives you the correct height. This is what most groups end up doing, and it is the single purchase that turns "we can sort of play here" into "this is our court." Set the net across the width of the tennis court, roughly at the tennis net line or in one half of the court if you want to run two games. Nets with wheels are worth the extra if you will be moving them every session.

Marking the lines

For casual play, the tennis lines can serve as rough boundaries and everyone agrees on the rest. For anything more, mark it properly:

• Court tape or floor marking tape. Wide, low-tack tape made for sports surfaces. It lifts cleanly and does not damage the acrylic.
• Chalk. Free, instant and gone in the rain. Fine for a one-off.
• Line markers or discs. Small weighted markers at the corners and the kitchen line. Less precise, sets up in seconds.
